Report: Russia to place $1 bln orders to build Akkuyu plant in ‘18

ANKARA, Nov 14 (PRIME) -- Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom will order more than U.S. $1 billion worth of goods and services required for the Akkuyu power plant in Turkey in 2018, CEO Alexei Likhachyov told newswire Anadolu in an interview published Tuesday.

“Next year we will place orders for over $1 billion more on terms of competition. We are satisfied with the terms and quality of works of the Turkish contractors so far… At the same time, we will continue work with Turkish investors, of course, with those who will enter the project on terms of co-founders. This issue is still open. We are considering various options but there is no decision so far,” Likhachyov said.

He said that Rosatom plans to commission all project documentation to Turkey until the end of 2017 in order to receive a full-scope license in January–March 2018 and continue construction.

The Akkuyu plant will comprise four units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each. Russian investment will amount to U.S. $22 billion. Turkey expects to launch the first unit in 2023 and to start its commercial use in May 2024. The launch of the second unit for commercial use is expected in May 2025.
